What is Vanguard?
The Vanguard Vision for an educational setting is to:
(1) Encourage faith in God as the students ultimate mentor and source of truth through the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ
(2)
Help the students find value in their own unique mission, introduce them to
various communication styles, and encourage them to gain the skills,
talents and gifts necessary so that they may communicate that mission to
the world
(3)
Help the students come face-to-face with greatness as they study the world,
history, people, and science in order to prepare them to become future
leaders* in society.
(4) Create an environment of love, respect, decency, trust, and confidence
(5) Teach service-oriented leadership
It is exciting to see youth and their leaders exploring their individual passions
as they find and follow their God-given missions in homes and at school!
What is this event for?
This event has been created to fill the need of helping people so they will be better able to understand and apply principles of the Vanguard method in their youth group and home:
We will:
-Look at the amazing collection of principles that make Vanguard what it is
-Give mentors and parents the tools they need to help apply those principles in their own unique situation
-Inspire us all to be the mentors that our youth need to find their God-given voice and change the world for good.
When and where is it?
Westminister Presbyterian Church in Fruit Heights
Saturday June 28th
At door registration starts at 8 am...then we hit the ground running at 8:30.
Check out our amazing schedule of events above--
This will be a power-packed day!
Why should I come?...I am so busy!
The world needs light and truth. The world needs you.
The world needs light and truth. The world needs you.
"There is a vacuum of competence in the world which must be filled. In a world crying out in desperate need for competence, an extraordinarily competent and loving person can no more withhold his or her competence than such a person could deny food to a hungry infant.Spiritually evolved people, by virtue of their discipline, mastery and love, are people of extraordinary competence, and in their competence they are called on to serve the world, and in their love they answer the call.
"They are inevitably, therefore, people of great power, although the world may generally behold them as quite ordinary people, since more often than not they will exercise their power in quiet or even hidden ways."--The Road Less Traveled by Peck
What do I need to do to prepare to come?
First, register!
Then, prepare!
Click on the schedule tab above. Click on the classes you are interested in and read the preparation materials linked beneath them. We know you are busy so we tried to keep the preparation minimal.
As a participant, we would love for you to come prepared to teach and share things you have studied and read in the different classes and workshops we will provide. We will also provide mentors who are experienced in the Vanguard method who will seek to follow the spirit in guiding the discussions. Follow God's promptings for you as you prepare for the classes you wish to attend and I promise you will get what you need out of this conference.
It will be amazing!
We will also be blessed to have two special guest presenters, Neil Flinders, author of "Teach the Children" and Audrey Rindlisbacher (see more about her here). You will be fed intellectually, spiritually, and physically, as we include lunch and dinner in our low registration cost. This is a non-profit event where the discussion of God and religion is welcome.
BUT WAIT!!! To make your experience EVEN BETTER...
In addition to the above class materials, please read/review as much of the following material as you can before attending, as it will help you understand Vanguard at a deeper level:
2. "Leadership Education"
by the DeMilles (particularly pgs 40-56 and 153-224 are good for
yearly--or more!--review, but reading this book will help explain a lot
of the elements of Vanguard, like socializing as families, the value of
projects, the need for master-level youth to design their own class for
the year, etc.)
3.A Classroom of Faith, Hope and Charity
4. Increase in Learning by Elder David Bednar - chapter 2
5. Teach the Children by Neil J. Flinders - chapters 12-14 and 18-19
6. Norms and Nobility by David Hicks - preface, prologue and chapter 1 (this is hard to get a copy of; I have one "loaner" copy...just do what you can!)

Additional reading suggestions:
-Oliver DeMille's address from the TJEd 2007 Forum: "The Eighth Key and the Four Levels of Leadership"(I don't purchase many things, but this is a treasure...very central to the Vanguard vision).
-A Thomas Jefferson Education by Oliver DeMille
Some of the classes will use this material for their class prep as well.
We look forward to seeing you there!
